History of the Sierra Nevada
The Sierra Nevada mountains and foothill regions are rich in history, but probably the most historic time was 1849 when gold was discovered along the American River. With the discovery of gold and the prospect for riches led to the greatest mass movement of people in the western hemisphere. Today there are many historical places to visit along highway 49, in an area that is called the Mother Lode. It streches from Sierra City in the North to Oakhurst in the South, the route is dotted with small towns each unique and with an abundance of historical buildings and mining areas.
The town of Coloma and the Marshall Gold Discovery State Park is a must stop if you are interested in the gold rush history. Another favorite stop is nearby Placerville, Old Hangtown, where much of the downtown has been preserved.
